Whether you want to remove a tattoo entirely or fade it for a cover up, aftercare is an important step in your treatment. Proper post-laser tattoo removal care can make a big difference in your recovery and the final results.

You should follow the same guidelines whether you have had a patch test or a full treatment.

General Aftercare

For the first few days after treatment, your main priority is to keep the area protected and comfortable.

  • If you have a covering applied after your treatment keep it on for 24 hours

  • Remove covering and clean and dry the area

  • If you don’t have a covering applied keep the treated area clean and dry for 48 hours.

  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, irritation, or discomfort.

  • Over-the-counter pain relief such as paracetamol can help with tenderness (avoid ibuprofen, as it can increase the risk of bruising and bleeding).

  • Aloe Vera gel can be used to soothe the skin.

  • Wear loose, breathable clothing to avoid friction on the treated area.

  • Drink plenty of water to support your body’s healing process, promote circulation, and flush away ink particles broken down by the laser.

Things to Avoid

To ensure proper healing and avoid complications, it’s important to keep to the following precautions:

  • No makeup on the treated area for 48 hours.

  • Avoid perfumes, fake tans, or strong skincare products for at least 72 hours.

  • Do not rub, scratch, or pick at the skin—especially if blistering or scabbing occurs, as this can lead to scarring.

  • Do not shave the area for 72 hours, and stay away from waxing or exfoliation for at least 7 days.

  • Avoid products with retinol, glycolic acid, or alpha hydroxy acids for 7 days.

  • Skip strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, or sunbeds for 72 hours—heat and sweat can slow healing.

  • No swimming for 72 hours due to bacteria in pools and natural water sources.

  • Minimise sun exposure, as UV rays can cause hyperpigmentation on healing skin.

  • Avoid alcohol and excess caffeine for 48 hours, as they may hinder recovery.

Sun Protection

Your skin will be more vulnerable to UV damage following laser tattoo removal. Consistent sun protection is essential.

  • Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 50 or higher for at least two weeks after each session.

  • Reapply sunscreen regularly when outdoors.

  • Even on cloudy or cool days, protect the skin, as UV exposure can affect pigmentation.
