What to expect after laser tattoo removal treatments

Typical reactions after laser tattoo removal

Typical reactions after laser tattoo removal can last for a few minutes or for several days.

  • Redness at the treatment site is nearly universal. It may look like you have sunburn.

  • Swelling may occur around or under the tattoo and sometimes extends to surrounding tissues; this is most obvious within the first 24 hours and lessens gradually over 2–4 days.

  • The area can feel warmer than the rest of the skin and may appear raised.

  • Tenderness and pain are common, with a sensation likened to mild burning or stinging that peaks soon after treatment and fades steadily over the first day.

  • As the skin begins healing itching may develop and last for a couple of days.

  • Frosting can appear immediately. Read our frosting blog to find out more.

  • Temporary skin colour changes such as lightening or darkening may occur around the treated site and typically resolve as the inflammation subsides.

  • Blistering can happen within a few hours but is usually mild.

  • Pinpoint bleeding or tiny scabs may form, especially with sensitive skin.

  • The tattoo may look darker or more pronounced immediately after treatment due to increased blood flow and swelling.

These reactions are all signs that the procedure is working and that the body has started its natural healing and ink-clearing process. With proper aftercare, most side effects resolve within 1–7 days, paving the way for longer-term healing and fading of
the tattoo.
